Australia - Aussie, Oz - is a big place. It's a huge island continent with a 1600-mile (25,760km) coastline. Taking a holiday there calls for some careful planning if you want to make good use of your time. Before going there, some initial research is a good idea. Then decide what what you personally want to do and see and go for it.
There's heaps to see and do in Australia but don't spread yourself out too much. You don't want to spend a lot of holiday time travelling on planes and buses in Australia getting from place to place. It's about 2500 miles (4000km) east to west and 2300 miles (3700km) north to south.
There's something for everyone and every interest in Australia - great fishing, yachting and water sports, unique and varied wildlife and fauna, wonderful natural attractions like the Great Barrier Reef anmd Ayers Rock, beautiful beaches and surf, vast bushland and deserts,big rainforests, mountains, snow skiing and cowboys on some of the biggest cattle stations in the world.
There are cute cities like Sydney in the State of New South Wales. It has one of the most picturesque harbours in the world and an international cuisine scene that is second to none. If you are a city type who wants to taste another city, Sydney and its environs has more than enough to satisfy every taste.
If you like beautiful tropical islands, coral reefs, diving and water sports take a look at Queensland. In Oz they call it the Sunshine State. It includes the Gold Coast (a sort of Hawaii or Miami). It also has a beautiful hinterland, including massive rainforests.
Lovers of wildlife will have a ball meeting up with truly unique Aussies like kangaroos, koalas, emus, platypus, dingoes and Tasmanian Devils.
Bird life abounds and includes the famous Aussie kookaburra, noted for its weird raucous laughter.
Only a quarter of Australia is settled so there is plenty of bush and desert to explore. In Australia they call it the Outback. But take care if going alone on a safari and seek expert advice before your trip. Many a traveller has perished in the Outback because they did not take proper precautions.
Trains buffs can enjoy memorable rides on world famous trains like the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs and the three-day trip on the Indian Pacific between Sydney and Perth, the longest straight rail run in the world.
Australia is English speaking but it's also a multi-cultural society so you will find just about every language in the world spoken there.
