Ferrets can make wonderful pets. Those who own them describe them as a cross between a kitten and a puppy. But don’t forget that these are not traditionally domesticated animals. Before you purchase a ferret contact your local wildlife or fish and game department, the humane society or your local veterinarian to find out if ferrets are legal in your area and whether or not you'll need a license to own one. Find a vet who understands the complexities of ferret care before you adopt. Not all vets will accept a ferret as a patient and this is not a something you want to deal with if you have an emergency. Set up an appointment with your chosen vet for a complete checkup for your animal.

Make sure that they have been given all the necessary vaccinations, including rabies and distemper. Discuss with your vet how often the ferret will need boosters and vaccinations. If you have children you may want to consider a different type of pet. Ferrets have sharp teeth and may bite when playing or if they feel threatened. Children should never be left alone with ferrets for the safety of the ferret as well as the child.

Once you have done your homework and are ready to purchase your new pet, choose the age and gender of your ferret. Ferrets are considered adults when they are 4-6 months old. Babies are called kits. Males are usually about 18-20 inches long and weigh 2-5 lbs. Females are considerably smaller, about 15 inches and weigh 1-2 1/2 lbs. Examine the ferret's appearance, look for bright eyes, a soft coat, healthy skin and whiskers and a playful attitude. Take your time to play with the animals before you purchase one. Each animal has its own distinct personality and you will be able to find a good match if you are patient. Coat colors vary greatly, ranging from white to silver and many shades of browns. Some ferrets may have white patches or stripes. Never purchase a ferret that has not been fixed and de-scented. It is especially important that the females are spayed. Female ferrets ovulate when they breed. If the female is not bred, she will remain in heat and can develop estrogen-induced bone marrow depression. This causes anemia and decreased platelet count, which can be fatal. Even when ferrets have been de-scented they still have a distinct scent. Weekly bathing can keep this scent from becoming too strong. Prepare to spend $75 to $100 on a ferret. Sometimes you can rescue one from a shelter, but be careful that you are aware of the reasons that the animal was sent to the shelter. If the ferret bites excessively or has other problems you need to know this before you adopt it.

Collect your necessary supplies before bringing your new ferret home. You will need special food, which runs about $4-5 per pound, a cage with a den, food and water containers, nail clippers, vitamins, treats and toys. Ferret-proof your house. Ferrets are mischievous and get into everything. Expect to enjoy a good 6 to 10 years with your ferret. You may have to do daily cleanup; ferrets can be litter-trained but are prone to shredding their floors and bedding. These active imps can quickly become a treasured part of your family.
