In 1989, the movie, "Field of Dreams" was released in movie theaters throughout the United States. No one knew then that over 11 years later, the movie would become a classic, and that the site where the film was made would still be a strong tourist attraction.
Situated three hours from Chicago, the Dyersville, Iowa field is actually the Lansing family farm. After the book, Shoeless Joe, by W. P. Kinsella, had been optioned for a movie, Iowa government lobbied film makers to have the movie made in their midwest state. To that end, the Lansing family farm in Dyersville was selected. After some renovations to the exterior of the house, and the construction of a baseball field, the movie starring Kevin Costner was filmed. Taking 14 hot summer weeks in the middle of the worst drought in years, the movie crew provided excitement for the entire small town.
The movie set still stands. After the film's release, many Iowa residents wanted to see the farm site where the movie was filmed. The Lansings printed up tee shirts and postcards and began a small souvenir stand on the property.
They also provided baseball bats and balls so that visitors could play on the baseball field, which is right in front of their corn field. Visitors now come from all around the United States (and some international visitors too) and some couples have had weddings at the site. The draw of the field is mysterious in nature, but very real all the same.
Admission to the Field of Dreams movie site is free; indeed, entire families can play baseball on the field, walk around the area and enjoy the day - not spending a cent. Visitors on most Saturdays and Sundays will likely find a picku game in progress, and teams welcoming new players as they drive up.
Souvenirs are more abundant and varied now. Everything from banners to calendars to mugs and ornaments are on sale. There is a second concession stand operated by a now part-owner of the site. The field is open from April to November, and it is not rented to anyone for events or fundraising.
Field of Dreams is a fun place to visit. So, bring your glove and head to the Field!
