Saving water can save you money and save the environment. By reducing the amount of water consumed by your household, you can reduce your utility costs and ensure that there is plenty of water available for this and future generations. The following 5 easy steps can be taken around your home to save on the water bill.
1) Fill That Toilet Tank
Flushing your toilet uses several gallons of water each time you do it. But you can use less water each time you flush your toilet if you put rocks in the toilet tank. Doing so will fill up space in the tank so less water will re-fill the tank to the appropriate level. Hardware stores also offer new flush saver toilets, which have smaller tanks and use less water than older toilets.
2) Replace those shower heads
Showering is another way to use lots of water quickly. Your local hardware store carries lower pressure shower heads that can save tens of gallo0ns of water with each shower that you take. Another way to save shower water is to get wet, turn the water off, lather up, and then turn the water back on to rinse off.
3) Do dishes and laundry in big loads.
Every time you run the dishwasher and washing machine you use a lot of water. So it stands to reason that the less frequently you use these appliances the more water you will save. Instead of running small loads every time you have dirty dishes or laundry, wait until you can fill the machine before you run the appliances.
4) Water in the evening or at night
Did you know that your plants require more watering when you water in the middle of the day? In order to save water, do your hand watering in the evening and set your sprinklers for the middle of the night. Watering at night will save water because less water evaporates in the cool night air, and a larger percentage of the water gets to the plants that need it.
5) Don't leave the water running when you wash the car.
If you leave the hose running while you wash your car you are wasting vast amounts of water letting it run down the gutter. You can save much of this water by buying a nozzle for your hose that can be turned off at the nozzle. That way you can continue to wash your car and turn off the water without having to walk all the way back to the source.
